🐶🥰Meet our patient Sgt. Major! This handsome German Shepherd boy wants to remind you that January is National Train Your Dog Month!
Our veterinarians get a lot of questions about the best techniques to train a puppy or adult dog and we believe our furry friends of all ages can learn best through Positive Reinforcement technique.
➕What is Positive Reinforcement? It is a type of training that uses a reward (treats, praise, toys, anything the dog finds rewarding) for desired behaviors. Because the reward makes them more likely to repeat the behavior, positive reinforcement is one of your most powerful tools for shaping or changing your dog’s behavior.
Here are some tips for starting or continuing with positive reinforcement training:
1. Make Sure to Time Commands Correctly:
Timing is everything when it comes to this technique. Make sure you are rewarding your pet immediately after they perform a positive behavior. This will communicate to your pet that they are being rewarded for that specific action.
2. Be Consistent:
Consistency is key. Always reward your pet for the desired behavior, even if it’s just with a pat on the head, and make sure to use the same commands every time. This helps avoid any confusion.
3. Keep it Short and Sweet:
Commands should ideally be one word. Your pet won’t associate a sentence with behavior, so keep commands as simple as possible.
4. Don’t Engage Undesired Behaviors:
This can be the most difficult thing for pet parents, but it’s imperative that you don’t unintentionally reward negative behaviors. For instance, if you let your dog outside every time they bark, they will realize this behavior gets them what they want. Instead, reward them when they stop barking.
Remember, Positive Reinforcement training is the best way to shape your dog's future behavior and strengthen the bond between you and your pooch!🤗💖

Lana Callie with Dr. Morales and nurse Mya during ...
Lana Callie with Dr. Morales and nurse Mya during her examination and puppy vaccinations visit today! 🥰🐶
We love to care for the new furry members in your family, be they adult dogs or puppies 🤗. Let us remind you how important it is when you get a new puppy to make sure that they receive their puppy shots! ⤵
✅ Just as they do for humans, vaccinations protect a pet from getting contagious diseases. Some of these diseases are painful yet treatable, yet others -including rabies — are fatal to your pet.
✅ What would happen if you did not keep your dog shots up to date? Your pet would lose the immunity offered by the vaccine and be at risk of getting rabies, canine distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, or parainfluenza.
✅ Not only is your pet at risk of getting sick without an updated vaccine but he or she could pass a disease onto other pets, creating an epidemic in your community that is entirely preventable.
✅ Most puppies do not even feel their shots. The process is quick, safe, and the right thing to do to protect your pet, your family and ensure that they can grow up to be happy and healthy dogs!❤️
If you have any questions about puppy shots, we are happy to answer them during a routine wellness exam for them!

💜🐶 Our patient Ginger came in for her Annual examination and vaccines with Dr Pou!
We are happy to report a clean bill of health for this beauty! 🤗🩺
Remember that just like children, our furry companions need vaccinations against dangerous viral and bacterial diseases. Vaccination remains the single most effective method for protecting healthy animals against infectious disease. They boost your pet's immunity, protecting them from several highly contagious diseases such as canine distemper, parvovirus infection and respiratory tract infections. Vaccines also protect against transmissible diseases such as rabies that pose a grave risk to humans.

🥰🐶Mia and nurse Estef here to talk about Pet Wellness!
A crucial part of making sure our beloved pets are enjoying a happy and healthy life, is bringing them to the vet for their regular wellness examinations🩺.
❗️Just like with humans, it's important that our pets visit the vet more than just when they are ill or injured. Having a regular physical exam can help prevent diseases by getting routine vaccinations and allowing your pet's veterinarian to look for any signs of potential health problems.
😺Think about this: Wellness exams can actually save money in the long run. Supportive care and treatments are much costlier the longer a condition or disease progresses and goes untreated for your beloved pet.
👨⚕️👩⚕️During the wellness visit, our doctors are able to perform thorough examinations of your pet's ears, eyes, nose, throat, mouth, as well as an assessment of the lungs, heart, digestive tract, genitalia, skin/coat condition, and the pet's overall mobility.

😍Our patient Mia is the perfect reminder that January is "Walk Your Dog Month"! 👟🦮
This beautiful girl surprised her family when she suddenly learned to walk on her two back legs (Don't miss her video!😃)
Benefits of walking with your dog⬇️
🐶Dogs need plenty of exercise throughout the year and the best way to keep them active is to take them for regular walks. Even a short walk around the block makes a big difference. So, begin this year with a pledge, better health for you and your dog!
🐕Physical activity releases endorphins that create a state of happiness. Think about how that walk will definitely improve your dog spirits.
🚶♀️Dog owners walk an average of nine hours per week. If walking at normal speed, this equates to 36 miles per week. That’s a good amount of exercise.
🐶Walk Your Dog Month means you get to spend more bonding time with your pup. If that’s not a great reason to love this month then we don’t know what is!
👯♀️Walking the dog means you are much more likely to meet other people in your neighborhood who are also out and about with their dogs. It’s good to be social, both for you and for your dog.
👁️It’s a popular myth that dogs are color blind. They can see in color but just not as vividly as humans and by going on walks, our furry friends get to stimulate their senses and discover new things.
Without regular walks, your dog’s health is at risk. As their pawrent, you need to do what is best for them to keep your pet healthy and happy for many years to come! 🤗💖

Helpful tips for keeping your four-legged family ...
Helpful tips for keeping your four-legged family members safe and happy as you embark on New Year’s Eve celebrations!🎉✨
🧨🎆Ensure that your pet has a safe, comfortable place to find sanctuary away from the booming sounds of fireworks. Make sure the space is escape proof and has adequate bedding, toys, and water. Some animals may benefit from one of the following to help lessen the intensity of voices and fireworks: White noise machine, Radio or TV.
🐶Remember that dogs will eat anything—even if does not seem like it would taste good! Be sure to monitor poppers, noisemakers and explosives before, during and after displays when there are residues and fireworks burned pieces scattered on the floor and outdoors.
🐕🐈⬛It is possible that despite your safe quiet space and calming medications, your pet may still manage to escape and run due to loud fireworks. In this case, it is wise to have up-to-date microchip information and identification tag on your pet. Collars with tags and a correct contact number are crucial.
🍹🥃Alcohol ingestion in pets can lead to depression, unsteady walking, vomiting and a serious drop in blood pressure and body temperature. Just get into one mixed drink can be fatal for a small dog.
😵💫As it becomes legalized in more and more states, Cannabis in edible form such as in chocolates or brownies, is also becoming more accesible for a curious pet. Marijuana can cause your pet to become unsteady, sleepy and sensitive to touch, and can cause a decrease in their heart rate and body temperature causing seizures and possible death.
❤️Let's keep our furry friends safe and healthy so they can enjoy a happy 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣3️⃣!
